How we frame and source
We aim to identify the important question clearly, distinguish fact from interpretation, and cite authoritative sources where they matter. We prefer primary sources: legislation, regulator guidance, court decisions and official statistics.
Opinion is labelled as opinion
Every brief carries a label: Explainer, Analysis or Opinion. Opinion pieces state a view and argue for it openly. Explainers and analysis aim to set out the position fairly, including where reasonable people disagree.
Editorial independence and commercial relationships
Nothing published on The Legacy Briefs is paid for. Coverage, placement and conclusions are not sold, and no bank, insurer, manager or other institution reviews or approves a brief before it is published.
The Legacy Briefs is not a bank, insurer, fund manager or licensed financial adviser, and it does not sell financial products. Any regulated activity connected to a reader's matter is carried out by an appropriately licensed firm, not by the publication.
Where the writer or The Legacy Briefs has a commercial relationship that is material to the subject of a brief, the brief says so in a disclosure note at the top, before the reader reaches any conclusion.
Where a reader chooses to take a matter further, the terms of any engagement, and any relationship with a third party that could bear on it, are set out in writing before anything proceeds.
General information, not advice
All material is general information only. It is not legal, tax, financial, investment, insurance or other professional advice. Do not act on it without advice that takes your own circumstances into account.
Sources, dates and jurisdictions
Unless a brief says otherwise, it is written for Singapore. Each brief shows when it was published and, where applicable, when it was last substantively reviewed. Laws, fees and thresholds change; check that anything you rely on is still current before acting.
Illustrations and examples
Charts identify their source and say when data is illustrative. Worked examples and family scenarios are composites unless stated otherwise: they explain an issue and are not a complete analysis of anyone's circumstances.
Corrections and updates
Send a substantiated correction request to Email The Legacy Briefs. Substantive corrections are noted at the foot of the relevant brief with the date of the change.
